Many commissioners commented about the lack of support and training in Commissioning when they took up their posts and therefore have had to learn on the job. Recent comments from the Parliamentary Health Committee have reinforced the need to improve standards of commissioning. A view to which many of our members subscribe.
In order to help define the role and provide a foundation for qualifications, a series of National Occupational Standards have been developed. Commissioners considered the new draft National Occupational Standards for Commissioning produced by Government Skills at a meeting held in London on 26th May 2010.
At this event the Accredited Commissioner exam by IoCP was launched. This is designed specifically to meet the skills and knowledge requirements as defined by Government Skills, the sector skills council. We would like to recognise the assistance given by R. Anderson Cowe, President of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators in the design of the programme.
We expect that this will contribute to an improvement in the standards of commissioning across the UK and we will seek to monitor user perceptions of these standards. This will mean better personalised services for users and reduce waste.
It will also provide a focus for assessment, appraisal and recruitment and will assist with job evaluation exercises and inevitably, the status of the profession.
The first date for registration for submission will be 1st July 2010 with submissions by Oct 1st
